A Systematic Methods Review of Photovoice Research with Indigenous Young People

Photovoice is an emerging qualitative research method used to engage community members in that highlights their lived experiences and initiate change. offers potential benefits conducted by with Indigenous communities through privileging knowledge perspectives. There a lack of synthesized evidence about the usage, benefits, challenges conducting communities, which this systematic methods review aims address. We specifically focus on young people Canada, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, United States. Five databases were searched systematically for articles including keywords ‘Indigenous’ ‘Photovoice’. Empirical studies papers reporting use majority cohorts participants included. Relevant data extracted analysed using integrative approach. Database searches yielded 1402 articles, 109 reviewed full 41 included review. These represented 37 unique studies, most from Canada ( n = 17), States 14). Our analysis revealed great variability how has been applied across people. However, some notable commonalities include recruitment via networks, participant involvement collection analysis. The associated included: fostering autonomy authority; photography being familiar fun; visual medium culturally appropriate peoples; effective engaging whole community. Challenges engagement difficulties between researchers participants; issues photography; ethical complexities. findings suggest largely research. there are logistical require careful consideration.
